This one week cruise on the Kennet and Avon Canal takes you through the pretty villages of Wilcot, Pewsey, Crofton and ends at the fascinating town of Hungerford.
Hungerford is a picturesque market town nestled in the heart of Berkshire, surrounded by idyllic countryside. The town is renowned for its thriving antiques trade, with numerous shops and markets offering an array of treasures waiting to be discovered. Hungerford also has lots of lovely little boutique shops, cozy pubs, and great restaurants.
This is a busy route, with quite a few locks to contend with at the start and end of the week, including the famous Caen Hill flight of locks.
A canal boat trip along the Kennet and Avon Canal between Bradford on Avon and Hungerford offers a scenic journey through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside. Here’s a route plan for this delightful trip:
Day 1: Bradford on Avon towards Caen Hill. Begin your journey in Bradford on Avon, a charming town with picturesque canal-side views. Navigate westward along the Kennet and Avon Canal, passing through idyllic countryside. You will only be able to cruise a two or three hours if you pick your boat up in the afternoon, so you’ll soon moor up for your first night on board.
Day 2: Caen Hill to Devizes. You’ll go through the famous Caen Hill Locks, an impressive flight of 29 locks before reaching Devizes, a picturesque market town.
Day 3: Continue your journey westward through the tranquil Wiltshire landscape.
Arrive at Pewsey, a delightful village surrounded by rolling hills. Mooring facilities are available here. Enjoy a peaceful evening by the canal and explore Pewsey’s pubs and local attractions.
Day 4: Pewsey to Hungerford. Pass through the picturesque Vale of Pewsey and if you have time make a stop at the village of Burbage, known for its scenic surroundings and historic charm. Mooring is available. Continue to Hungerford and explore the antique shops, boutiques, and charming streets. Moor your boat in Hungerford, where you can spend the night before heading back the way you came.
Day 5 – 7 : Return to Bradford on Avon
Throughout your journey, be sure to savor the peaceful countryside, experience the joy of navigating locks, and appreciate the tranquility of life on the water. The Kennet and Avon Canal offers a wonderful blend of natural beauty and historical charm, making it a perfect destination for a canal boat adventure.
